Grab Bag Contents
In addition to an EPIRB, your grab bag should always be packed and ready to go. Use a
brightly colored, waterproof bag that is marked with reflective tape and fitted with a lan-
yard. Our grab bag carries the following equipment to supplement the life raft survival
pack, most of it in individual Zip-lock bags:
• Flares (hand held, floating, and rocket flares)
• Handheld GPS
• Handheld VHF
• Lithium batteries for both the above (non-rechargeable)
• Foil blanket
• Handheld compass
• Copies of ship's papers and passports
• Flashlight (hand-crank type)
• Energy bars
• Paper and pencil
• Small knife and cutting board
If we had the time, we would also bring the 5-liter water container we keep next to the
companionway (half-filled for floatation). Above the chart table, we keep a list of what to
do in an abandon ship situation, from making a mayday call to packing essential equip-
ment.
