Our experience along this route confirms the data from the theoretical example above: the
times of abundant solar power for us were indeed outside the tropics - that is, in New
Zealand and southeastern Australia during the southern hemisphere summer. While in the
tropics, we were glad that we did have our trusty Aquair generator set up in wind mode to
augment the solar panels' output.
Ultimately, what's true on land also applies on a boat: your best source of energy is con-
serving it. With realistic expectations as to what your green on-board power plant can de-
liver, you should take a critical look at what's draining the Amps on your boat. After all,
part of the reason we're on the boat is that we want to get away from all those shore-side
gadgets and gizmos. And once they're out of reach, you'll find you won't miss them
much.
