Post Script: Other Pacific Marketplaces
Of course, Australia isn't the only place to sell a boat. To us, however, it seemed like the
most robust market with the largest number of potential buyers. There's a concentration of
boats for sale in Tahiti, but that was only a fraction of the way across our dream route.
From what we observed in Tahiti, it's more of a buyer's than a seller's market. Fiji has a
much smaller market, plus there's the issue of cyclone season storage. New Caledonia,
meanwhile, is no longer the seller's paradise it once was. A broker I approached for an in-
terview there gave this simple advice: “Go to Australia instead.”
New Zealand is the next biggest market where boats do move - but with a population of
four million to Australia's twenty-three million, the potential customer base is that much
smaller. Foreigners do fly in to view boats in New Zealand, but boats can wait for longer
periods before finding a taker. It's not impossible to sell a boat in any of these places, but
overall, Australia is your safest bet. Cruisers with flexible schedules might also consider
giving New Zealand or New Caledonia a try for one season before moving on to Australia.
