New Zealand to Fiji: the Long Way Around
Once cyclone season looms over the tropics, cruisers must decide where to pass those risky
months. While some choose to hole up in the handful of proven cyclone shelters in French
Polynesia, Fiji, or New Caledonia, most take themselves out of the line of fire by sailing
out of the cyclone belt. The vast majority who do so head for New Zealand. After all, it's
hard to resist the siren call of beautiful scenery, a familiar language and culture, and
topnotch boat services.
We spent six relaxed months in New Zealand, and time flew. Even in a suitcase crammed
with exotic Pacific memories, New Zealand stands out for us as a special place and time.
There's something for everyone, from quiet hidy-hole anchorages to the city vibes of Auck-
land and the magnificent alpine scenery of the South Island. In fact, many cruisers find
themselves boomeranging between New Zealand and the tropics for years on end. (It's a
rough life, but somebody's got to do it.)
In this section, we discuss the tricky passages between New Zealand and the tropics - the
biggest challenges of our Pacific crossing. We also detail cruising options on and off the
beaten path, as well as list options for boat work and land travel. Ultimately, New Zealand
will not disappoint, no matter how you choose to spend your time.
