Green Wakes: VEPA Leads the Way in
Tonga
Responsible cruising has its challenges, especially in developing countries. In Tonga,
however, Vava'u Environmental Protection Association (VEPA) helps sailors do the right
thing by identifying recycling points, supporting voluntary beach cleanups, and hosting so-
cial fundraisers. The NGO also works closely with local communities, sponsoring turtle
monitoring programs, encouraging sustainable practices, and running educational programs
in high schools. Visiting sailors are invited to inquire about participating; what better way
to get to know your host country? VEPA is actively helping sailors from around the world
leave green wakes; may others follow their lead. (Visit VEPA at ht-
