In-Depth Information
For Pacific-bound sailors, though, the practical aspects of Panama are just as significant as
the cultural value. It's the last place to stock up on supplies before heading into seven-
thousand miles of open water. From oil filters to anchor rode and brownie mix - Panama
has it all, and at the best prices you'll see until…well, until you're back in the Americas.
This section of Pacific Crossing Notes touches on each of those subjects, including tips
for organizing a canal transit, a list of our favorite chandlers and suppliers in Panama City,
as well as a look at historic Portobelo, a taste of Kuna Yala (San Blas), and an overview of
a “working cruise” in the lesser-known Las Perlas archipelago.
To be sure, Panama can be gritty (and in some cases, corrupt), but we found that the pros
vastly outweighed the cons (pun intended). For us, Panama marked the beginning of a
great adventure - and the beginning of many friendships that carried on as we all sailed
westward over the horizon.
