Weather Notes
Good literature on “how weather works” in the South Pacific abounds. Jim Corenman's
Letters from the South Pacific [#1] have an excellent section about weather (page 17 on-
wards) that provides an entertaining yet insightful introduction. If you want to dive deeper
into the subject, David Sapiene's Weather for the Yachtsman [#2] is a good source written by
an experienced New Zealand sailor and forecaster. His weather-related presentations at
Pangolin [#3] are also worthwhile checking out. These documents are available for down-
load. Last but not least, there is Bob McDavitt's Mariner's Metpack [#4] . Written by another
New Zealand meteorologist, it also provides a good introduction to South Pacific weather,
albeit with a more specific focus on New Zealand and the NZ Metservice's forecast
products. McDavitt's Metpack is only available in print.
In this chapter, we'll first outline what to expect in terms of weather as you're moving west
through the South Pacific. We'll follow with a description of how we approached weather
forecasting aboard Namani and finish with a peek at ocean currents along the way.
