Sami Parliament NOTABLE BUILDING
(Sámediggi; Kautokeinoveien 50) The Sami Parliament was established in 1989 and
meets four times annually. In 2000 it moved into a glorious new building, encased in mel-
low Siberian wood, with a birch, pine and oak interior. The main assembly hall is shaped
like a Sami tent, and the Sami library , lit with tiny lights like stars, houses over 35,000
volumes, plus other media. From late June to mid-August, there are 30-minute tours leav-
inghourly,onthehalfhour,between 8.30amand2.30pm(except 11.30am).Therestofthe
year, tours are at 1pm, Monday to Friday. There are similar Sami parliaments in Finland
and Sweden.
Ássebákti Cultural & Nature Trail WALKING TRAIL
On the Rv92, 12km south of Karasjok heading for Kautokeino, this 3.5km trail (signed
'Kulturminner' on the highway) is well worth undertaking for a taste of the forest even
though, despite its name, it doesn't actually have much that's cultural. This said, around 25
minutes out (allow two hours for the full out-and-back route), there are traces of trappers'
pits, store mounds and, across the river, turf huts.
