Andenes is the only place of any size but other nature safaris depart from the tiny ports
of Bleik and Stave, about 10km and 25km southwest of the town.

The straggling village of Andenes with its rich fishing history is northern Norway's main
base for whale-watching. Its harbour front is a charming jumble of wooden boat sheds and
general nautical detritus.

Whale Safari WHALE VIEWING
( 76 11 56 00; www.whalesafari.no ) Far and away the island's biggest outfit, Whale
Safarirunspopularwhale-watchingcruises(adult/childNkr830/500)betweenlateMayand
mid-September. It also operates the Whale Centre. Tours begin with a guided visit to the
Centre, followed by a two- to four-hour boat trip. If you fail to spot at least one sperm
whale, your money is refunded or you can take another trip for free. There's a good chance
of spotting minke, pilot, humpback and orca (killer whale). Trips depart at least once daily
with up to six sailings in high summer. Your fee includes a snack, if you can face it - staff
passaroundtheseasickness pills,justlikeairline boiledsweets,beforetakeoff.Badweath-
er and/or high seas only rarely prevent a Whale Safari sailing. All the same, try to build in
an extra day on the island, just in case you're unlucky.

Whale Centre provides a perspective for whale-watchers, with displays on whale research,
huntingandthelifecycleofthesegentlegiants.Mostpeoplevisitthecentreinconjunction
with a whale safari.
