Sights & Activities
Behind the old prison in Storvågen, a trail climbs to the statue honouring King Øystein.
In 1120 he ordered the first rorbuer to be built to house fishermen, who previously had
been sleeping beneath their overturned rowing boats. This wasn't just an act of kindness;
His Majesty needed to keep his fisherfolk warm, dry and content since the tax on exported
dried fish was the main source of his revenue.
