White-Water Rafting
Thecascading, icy-black waters andwhite-hot rapidsofcentral Norwayarearafter'spara-
dise during the short season from mid-June to mid-August. A number of reputable oper-
ators offer trips, primarily in central Norway. These range from short, Class II doddles to
Class III and IV adventures and rollicking Class V punishment. Most are guaranteed to
provide a thrill, and the rates include all requisite equipment and waterproofing.

Winter
Unlike in other countries where snowfalls create chaos and bring life to a halt, Norway re-
mains very much alive and active throughout the long winter months. Skiing is the most
popular winter activity (both as a leisure pursuit and a means of getting around), while
snowmobiling serves a similar purpose in the far north and on the sub-polar archipelago of
Svalbard. Dog-sledding is another major drawcard.
Dog-Sledding
Norway's Sami have not traditionally used dog-sledding as a means of getting around, but
indigenouspeoplesinGreenlandandSiberiahavedonesoforcenturiesanditreadilytrans-
fers to the Norwegian wilds. This is easily our favourite winter activity because it enables
you to experience Arctic and sub-Arctic wilderness areas by slowing you down to a pace
that suits the quiet beauty of the terrain free from engine noise, quite apart from being one
of Norway's most environmentally sound means of getting around.
Expeditions can range from half-day tasters to multiday trips with overnight stays in re-
mote forest huts. With most operators, you'll have the option (depending on the number
of travellers in your group) of mushing your own sled (after a brief primer course before
