Fishing
Norway'sriversandlakeshavedrawnavidanglerssincethe19thcenturyandsalmon-fish-
ing is the undoubted star attraction. Norway's salmon runs are still legendary and, in June
and July, you can't beat the rivers of Finnmark. In addition to salmon, 41 other fish spe-
cies inhabit the country's 200,000 rivers and lakes. In the south, you'll find the best fishing
from June to September, and in the north, in July and August. In Svalbard, the best fishing
holes are well-kept secrets, but Arctic char inhabit some rivers and lakes. The 175-page

and trout-fishing areas, fees and regulations, of which there are many.
Regulations vary between rivers but, generally, from mid-September to November, fish
under 20cm must be thrown back. At other times between August and May, the limit is
30cm. Fishing is also prohibited within 100m of fish farms, or cables and nets that are
anchored or fastened to the shore, while fishing with live bait is illegal.
Anyone over 16 who wishes to fish in Norway needs to purchase an annual licence
(Nkr220forsalmon,troutandcharandNkr110forotherfish),whichissoldatpostoffices.
To fish on private land, you must also purchase a local licence (Nkr60 to Nkr400 per day),
which is available from sports shops, hotels, campsites and tourist offices. Some areas re-
quire a compulsory equipment disinfection certificate (Nkr110).
