These days, Kristiansund still looks below the sea for its wealth. Even though the waters
are no longer so bountiful - the huge hauls of yesteryear are now the source of tales as tall
as any angler's - cod-processing remains important. A significant amount of the world's
klipfishiscuredinandaroundthetown.And,asthemostsignificantplacebetweenTrond-
heimandStavangerforservicingNorway'sNorthSeaoilfields,Kristiansundtakesitsshare
of black gold.

Gamle Byen HISTORIC QUARTER
Kristiansund's old town lives on in a part of Innlandet Island, a few of whose clapboard

a decent meal and a drink - hosts cultural and musical events. The most convenient and
enjoyable way of getting there from the centre is on the stubby Sundbåt ferry from Piren
ferry port.
Mellemværftet SHIPYARD
Offline map Google map Something of a nautical junkyard, Mellemværftet, free and ac-
cessible any time, is best approached on foot along the quayside from the Smia Fiskeres-
taurant. It's difficult to make out what's what amid the clutter but it includes the remnants
of Kristiansund's 19th-century shipyard, a forge, workshop, and workers' quarters. There
are some illustrative photographs, captioned in Norwegian.

Nordmore Museum is responsible for several museums in Kristiansund and Møre og
Romsdal county. They're housed, for the most part, in historic buildings whose exter-iors
