Our Fragile Planet isamultimediaexhibitionwithsounds,smoke,rumblingsunderfoot,
a 2040 TV newscast and more that leads you from the earth's creation to the present - and
the consequences of our generation's overuse of the world's resources. After a doomsday
visual hypothesis, it ends on a note of qualified optimism expressed by the breathy voice

Activities
Book Browsing
As you saunter through this one-street village, pause to browse a selection of its dozen
secondhand bookshops. Tusand og Ei Natt (Thousand and One Nights), the large - un-
signed - bookshop nearest to the ferry jetty, has a 15m-long row, stacked seven shelves
high, of novels in English. Gamle Posten too carries plenty of titles in English. If thrillers
are your bedtime frisson, call by Bok & Bilde, at the tourist office.
Kayaking
At the small fjord-side shack belonging to Fjærland Kayak & Glacier ( 928 54 674;
www.kayakglacier.no ) , you can hire a kayak, canoe, motor or rowing boat or join one of
its daily guided kayaking trips (May to August), ranging from 2½ hours (Nkr400) to a full
day (Nkr870).
Walking
The tourist office's free sheet, Escape the Asphalt, lists 12 marked walking routes, varying
from 30 minutes to three hours. For greater detail, supplement this with Turkart Fjærland
(Nkr70) at 1:50,000, which comes complete with route descriptions and trails indicated;
pull on your boots and you're away. Most walks follow routes the local shepherds would
have used until quite recently to lead their flocks to higher summer pastures. Stamp a card
at the end of each and, after you've completed four, the tourist office will grant you a dip-
loma (Nkr25).
Fjærland Kayak & Glacier offers more demanding guided glacier treks (Nkr600 to
Nkr750), leaving at 8.30am each morning.
