In-Depth Information
recreating millions of years of natural history, an escape chute that kids love and some
amazing models of oil platforms.
Tracing the history of oil formation and exploration in the North Sea from discovery in
1969 until the present, the museum nicely balances the technical side of oil exploration
and extraction with archive footage and newspapers of significant moments in the history
of Norwegian oil. Not least among these include coverage of the Alexander L Kielland
tragedy in 1980, when 123 oil workers were killed; the 1972 decision by Norway's parlia-
ment that Statoil should be based in Stavanger; and the 1950s declaration by a Norwegian
government commission that 'the chances of finding oil on the continental shelf off the
Norwegiancoastcanbediscounted'.You'llspendlongerherethanyouplanned,especially

STAVANGER FOR CHILDREN
Stavanger has plenty to keep the kids occupied, with many museums including inter-
active exhibits. Older children will enjoy the Norsk Oljemuseum , while younger
visitors could spend an entire day playing in the Children's Museum ( Click here ).
The Arkeologisk Museum ( Click here ) sometimes has Viking-themed activities in
summer, while children of all ages will enjoy the playground fashioned from oil-ex-
ploration equipment outside the Norsk Oljemuseum. The tourist office sells a booklet
called Teddy in Stavanger (Nkr69) , which is aimed at children and has routes around
central Stavanger with questions for children. And the boat trips ( Click here ) that
take you out into the fjords always have appeal.
Valbergtårnet WATCHTOWER & GUARD MUSEUM
(Valbergata 2; admission Nkr25; 11am-3pm mid-Jun-mid-Aug, 11am-3pm 1st Sun
of month mid-Aug-Dec & Mar-mid-Jun) This historic 26m-high tower was constructed
as a guards' lookout in 1850 and served as a lookout for fire and suspicious activity until
1922. It now contains an interesting little museum, and there are reasonable views over the
harbour towards the Old Town from its top; it's OK to open the windows to take photos.
