lift pass Nkr325/255) This ski centre, at 1850m on the icy heights of Norway's highest
mountain, is a stunning spot for summer skiing. From Galdesand on the Rv55, follow
the Galdhøpiggen road (Nkr85 toll) to its end at 1841m. The main season runs from
June to mid-November. Apart from the skiing opportunities, this road takes you to the
highest point reachable by road in Norway. Nearby, the Klimapark 2469 & Istunnel
( www.oppland.no/klimapark2469 ; adult/child Nkr300/150; guided tours 10am
Thu-Sun mid-Jun-mid-Aug) is a 30m-long ice tunnel with an exhibition on the region's
natural history and climate change. Buy your tickets either through the Lom tourist office
or Juvasshytta.

Turtagrø to Øvre Årdal
The toll mountain road between Turtagrø and the industrial town of Øvre Årdal is one of
Norway's most scenic short drives. Open from late May to October, it leads above the tree
line through wild and lonely country. From late June to late August, the route is served by
daily bus (Nkr125, one hour). The vehicle toll (Nkr75) is collected by a gatekeeper at the
pass (1315m).
Randsverk to Fagernes
BetweenRandsverkandFagernes,theRv51climbsthroughthehillyandforestedSjodalen
country onto a vast upland with far-ranging views of peaks and glaciers; it's used by hikers
headingforJotunheimen'seasternreaches.EnrouteitpassestheDNThutatGjendesheim,
the launching point for the popular day hike along the Besseggen ridge.
Frommid-JunetoearlySeptember,twodailybusesrunbetweenOttaandGol,viaVågå,
Randsverk,Gjendesheim,ValdresflyaandFagernes.You'llhavetochangeatGjendesheim.
From Otta, the trip to Gjendesheim takes two hours and costs Nkr103. Valdresflya is just
15 minutes further.
Jotunheimvegen
Branching off the Rv51 at Bygdin, the 45km-long Jotunheimvegen
( www.jotunheimvegen.no ) toSkåbuismuchquieterandeverybitaspicturesque.It'susu-
ally open from mid-June until October, depending on the weather, and you pay a Nkr100
toll; motorcycles travel for free. There's no public transport along the route but there are
