Gålåvatn lake is the scene in early August for an opera concert of Edvard Grieg's
Peer Gynt . To reach Skei, head north of Lillehammer along the E6 and at Tretten
take the turn-off for the Rv254. At Svingvoll, Peer Gynt Vegen branches off to the
northwest.
OLYMPIC SKI SLOPES
Lillehammer has two Olympic ski slopes. Hafjell Alpine Centre ( www.hafjell.no ) ,
15km north of town, hosted the downhill events, while Kvitfjell Alpine Facility
( www.kvitfjell.no ) ,50kmnorthoftown,wasusedforcross-country.Bothofferpublicski-
ing between late November and late April and they're connected by bus with Lillehammer
Skysstasjon.
AULESTAD
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1903 and lived on a farm at
Aulestad ( www.maihaugen.no/aulestad ; Follebu; adult/child/student/senior Nkr100/
50/80/80; 10am-5pm May-Aug, shorter hours rest of yr) , 18km northwest of Lille-
hammer. It has been lovingly restored, although you'll need your own vehicle to get here.

number ofattractions that are worth a detour onyourway between Oslo and the north. The
showpieceVikingShipSportsArenadatesfromthe1994WinterOlympicsinLillehammer
when Hamar hosted a number of events, but there are also some good museums.
