Sights
Author, playwright and so-called 'Father of Modern Drama', Henrik Ibsen (see the boxed
text, Click here ) was born in Skien on 20 March 1828. In 1835 the family fell on hard
times and moved out to the farm Venstøp, 5km north of Skien, where they stayed for sev-
en years. The 1815 farmhouse has now been converted into the excellent Henrik Ibsen-
museet ( www.telemarkmuseum.no , in Norwegian; Venstøphøgda; adult/child Nkr70/
30; noon-5pm Mon-Fri, 11am-5pm Sat & Sun Jun-Aug) .Therearesometerrificau-
diovisual displays in the former barn, while guides (some of whom are Ibsen actors) show
youaroundthefamilyhome.AskalsoaboutIbsentheatreperformanceshereoratthetour-
istoffice,orcheckouttheprogramatthe Theater Ibsen ( www.teateribsen.no , in Norwe-
gian; Hesselbergsgt 2), which is in the town centre, a block back from the harbour.

Getting There & Away
Nor-Way Bussekspress buses run to Rjukan (Nkr273, 3¼ hours) once or twice daily. NSB
trains run every hour or two to Larvik (Nkr91, 45 minutes) and Oslo (Nkr199 to Nkr300,
three hours).
