have made the crossing millennia before. His first raft, Ra, sank soon after setting
out, but the dogged Heyerdahl successfully completed the crossing in Ra II .
In 1978, at the age of 64, the indefatigable Heyerdahl sailed the Tigris from the
Euphrates and Tigris Rivers, down the Persian Gulf and across the Indian Ocean to
Djibouti to prove how the ancient Sumerians travelled widely.
Heyerdahl died of cancer in northern Italy on 18 April 2002.

old timbered house opposite the Maritime Museum at the eastern end of the harbour. The
rooms themselves might be small but they are crammed with character thanks to the arty
owners filling them with colourful furniture and liberally splashing bright paint across the

1903 hotel represents a good choice right on the waterfront. Be warned though that the re-
ception is often closed in the mornings.

Dated but spacious rooms fill this oversized and really rather ugly hotel on the waterfront,
but it's well run and well equipped. Parking costs Nkr50 per day.
