HALDEN CANAL (HALDENKANALEN)
East andnorthofHalden, acanal system connects the townwith Göteborg,Sweden, forall
butoneshortdrysection(1.8km).ThehighlightistheBrekkeLocks,asystemoffourlocks
between Femsjøen and Aspern (on the Halden-Strømsfoss run), which raise and lower the
boats a total of 26.6m.
Canoe hire is available from Kirkeng Camping ( 90 19 42 44) , 5km northeast of
towninAremark,ifyouprefertoexploreunderyourownsteam.Youcanpickupaboating
and recreation map from the tourist office in Halden.
Otherwise, you can take a ride on the tourist cruise boats or M/S Turisten ( 90 60
63 21; www.turisten.no , in Norwegian) , which follows the Haldenkanalen between Tis-
tedal (just east ofHalden) andStrømsfoss (adult/child return Nkr450/free, fourhours).The
boat leaves Strømsfoss at 10am and begins its leisurely return from Tistedal at 3.30pm on
Wednesday and Friday to Sunday from 23 June to 11 July. Yes, you read that correctly; it
operates for a grand total of 18 days a year….
A shorter boat trip, and one with a slightly less work-shy crew, is the M/S Strømsfoss
( 90 60 63 21; www.turisten.no , in Norwegian) , which follows the same route as the
Turisten. The boat leaves Strømsfoss at 11am and Tistedal at 3pm on Wednesday and Fri-
day to Sunday from 23 June to 22 August (adult/child return Nkr290/free). To reach the
townofTistedal,takebus103or106(Nkr32,18minutes,twicehourlyexceptlateSaturday
afternoon and Sunday). You'll need to drive to Strømsfoss to do the return trip.
