Fredrikstad is home to one of the best-preserved, and prettiest, fortress towns in Scand-
inavia: the Gamlebyen (Old Town), which has a modern waterfront district just across the
water.OnceanimportanttradingcentrebetweenmainlandEuropeandwesternScandinavia,
Fredrikstad also has a cathedral (1880), which contains stained-glass work by Emanuel Vi-
geland; bizarrely, the steeple contains a lighthouse, which still functions at night.
