THE GREENEST FESTIVAL?
Music festivals aren't renowned for their green credentials, but the Øya Festival
( www.oyafestivalen.com ; Aug) , the largest rock and indie music festival in Nor-
way, is an exception to the rule. The four festival stages are powered through renew-
able energy, all rubbish is recycled, and maybe most impressively, the sewage gener-
ated by the 16,000 festival goers is converted into bio-fuel and used to power the
buses that take people to and from central Oslo and the festival grounds.
The Øya Festival attracts some of the biggest names in the rock and indie scene,
with performers at the 2010 festival including the Flaming Lips, Air, LCD Soundsys-
tem and Paul Weller as well as nearly 200 other bands. In addition there are all the
normal festival sideshows.
Other Oslo festivals of note include the following:
Inferno Metal Festival MUSIC
( www.infernofestival.net ; late Apr) This festival lets the dark lords of heavy metal
loose on the good people of Oslo.
Norwegian Wood Festival MUSIC
( www.norwegianwood.no ; Jun) Oslo plays host to dozens of music festivals but this
is one of the bigger ones. The 2010 event saw Van Morrison as one of many performers.
Oslo International Jazz Festival JAZZ
( www.oslojazz.no ; Aug) Jazz and Oslo's long summer evenings go well together. This
festival brings big names to the city.
Oslo Opera Festival OPERA
( www.operafestival.no ; Sep) Live opera fills the concert halls and even the streets of
Oslo for three weeks in September.
