Method of Investigation

1. User inquiries

1.1 Questionnaire inquiries

Selection of objectives for questionnaire:
Works with over 30 employees in the ten industries listed in Table A.2 were selected
based on the statistics on industrial works by the Management and Coordination
Agency. At selection of the objectives, we used random sampling method suitable for
statistical analysis.

b. Inquiries table

(1) The same format was used for both users and suppliers.

(2) The format is mainly table type and selection type.

1.2 Interview inquiries

a. The objectives of inquiries were listed among heating furnaces, heat treatment furnaces,

and aluminum-melting furnaces, which are the target of the development of a high
performance furnace.

b. Number of inquiries:

(1) Heating furnaces: 6 types (continuous, batch, large/middle/small) × 3 cases

(2) Heat treatment furnaces: 6 types (continuous, batch, large/middle/small) × 3 cases

(3) Aluminum-melting furnaces: 3 types (large/middle/small) × 3 cases

a. Investigation of the related statistics of Ministry of International Trade and Industry,

Agency of Natural Resources and Energy, Environment Agency, etc.

b. Investigation of data of the related industrial organizations: The Japan Iron and Steel

Federation, the Japan Institute of Gas, the Japan Petroleum Federation, the Japan
Institute of Electric Heating, the Japan Forging Industry Federation, etc.

URNACES AND NERGY ONSUMPTION

The number of operational industrial furnaces and energy consumption were each
estimated statistically using the results of questionnaires based on the number of
groups within various categories of industries. The results are shown in Table A.5 .
From the table, according to industrial companies with more than 30 employees,
the number of combustion furnaces consuming over 582 kW (500 Mcal/h) and
electric furnaces consuming over 50 kVA is estimated to be about 39,300 in total.
The annual total heat consumption is 2901.6 × 10 MJ/year (693 × 10 Mcal/year)

or 75 × 10 l/year of converted crude oil.
