In-Depth Information
Gas treatment furnaces refer to direct combustion gas treatment furnaces (incin-
erators) used as deodorizing machines for exhaust gas generated at painting or
printing plants. The purpose of the application for the test was to realize energy
savings. Table 5.29 shows the kinds of exhaust gas treated in fiscal 1998. The
treatment gas in the gas treatment furnaces themselves is combustible. The fuel
required for the facility incorporating this high performance industrial furnace was
used only to raise the temperature on facility start-up and the establishment of an
ignition flame, and it became apparent that a minimum amount of fuel was necessary
to operate the modified system.
Melting furnaces adopted in fiscal 1998 numbered six, which included five
aluminum-melting furnaces and one glass-melting furnace. The purpose of modify-
ing the melting furnaces into high performance industrial furnaces was to achieve
energy savings and size reduction. Two aluminum-melting furnaces, which had not
been equipped with a waste energy recovery function, recorded an energy savings
of more than 60%. Other furnaces with different types of waste energy recovery
systems realized energy savings of about 30%.
5.5.4 E FFECTS OF M ODIFICATIONS IN THE F IELD T ESTS
The effects achieved in the field tests are arranged on the basis of the data included
in the respective reports submitted by 58 joint researchers. However, it is necessary
to study the conditions under which the data were collected to compare with the
data in the same table. Follow-up investigation and analysis of this aspect will be
conducted in the future. An outline of the results to date is given.
The waste heat recovery rates were markedly improved from those of conven-
tional furnaces. All types of furnaces achieved heat recovery rates higher than an
average rate of 60% ( Figure 5.85 ) .
