thickness of a steel slab. This has been interpreted as an empirical factor for deter-
mining the furnace height. The results presented in reference 3 have been used in
the design caluclation as a sufficient condition. The pitch between burners has been
determined by experimental factors such as the size of the tile. Some experimental
results 4 showed that the optimum point of the heat flux ratio exists in a pitch ranging
between 2.0 to 2.5 m. This is due to a deviation of the heat flux (a temperature
gradient in the steel plate) affected by both the furnace height and the burner pitch
in the case of combining the furnace height and the burner pitch, as shown in Figures
4.9 and 4.10 . These figures come from the results of tests on changing the furnace
