Research from processor vendors show that at a maximum, hyper-threading can improve performance
by 30 percent. And the performance increase is not guaranteed. In some cases, performance may degrade,
because the operating system may accidently schedule a lot of tasks to what it thinks are two separate
processors, but those two logical processors maybe just one physical processor. It all depends on how
your application is written.
If you want to use hyper-threading, here are two rules to follow:
Since hyper-threading is a relatively new technology, Windows Server 2000 does not have
additional features built-in to provide extra support for this feature. You might want to get the
latest Windows Server operating systemwith the latest patch.
Conduct before and after testing to confirm whether hyper-threading works for your
application. Don't blindly assume that hyper-threading will deliver you out of your
predicaments. Let your performance data tell you if it needs to be turned on or not.
