appearance with the denser central archipelago than its more barren northern
counterpart, the southern archipelago is generally much quieter in terms of visitor
numbers, because it's harder to reach from central Stockholm.

Just an hour from the capital, the island of Vaxholm is a popular weekend destination for
Stockholmers. Its eponymous town has an atmospheric wooden harbour, whose imposing
fortress (daily: June noon-4pm; July & Aug 11am-5pm; 50kr; W vaxholmsfastning.se)
once guarded the waterways into the city, superseding the fortifications at Riddarholmen.
Having successfully staved off attacks from the Danes and the Russians in the seventeenth
and eighteenth centuries, the fortress is now an unremarkable museum of military bits and
