CLASSICAL MUSIC
Classical music is always easy to find in Stockholm. There's generally something on at one of the following venues:
Konserthuset in Hötorget, Norrmalm ( T 08 786 02 00, W konserthuset.se); Berwaldhallen, Strandvägen 69, Östermalm
( T 08 784 18 00, W berwaldhallen.se); and Musikaliska Akademien, Blasieholmstorg 8, near the National Art Museum
( T 08 407 18 00, W musakad.se). Organ music can be heard at Adolf Fredriks kyrka, Holländargatan 16, Norrmalm; St
Jakobs kyrka in Kungsträdgården, Norrmalm; Gustav Vasa kyrka in Odenplan; and Storkyrkan in Gamla Stan - consult What's
On (see p.65). Operan, on Gustav Adolfs torg, is Stockholm's main opera house ( T 08 791 44 00, W operan.se); for less
rarefied presentations, check out the programme at Dramaten, Nybroplan, Östermalm ( T 08 667 06 80, W dramaten.se).
THEATRE AND CINEMA
Stockholm has dozens of theatres , but naturally most productions are in Swedish. For English-language
performances check out Sweden's oldest English-language theatre company, Stockholm Players ( W stockholmplayers
.se), established in the 1920s. If you want other tickets, it's worth waiting for reduced-price standby tickets, available from
the kiosk in Norrmalmstorg. Kulturhuset ( T 08 508 315 08, W kulturhuset.stockholm.se) in Sergels torg has a full range
of artistic and cultural events, most of them free; the information desk on the ground floor has free programmes. Cinema-
going is an incredibly popular pastime in Stockholm. The largest venue in the city centre is Filmstaden Sergel in Hötorget
( T 08 562 600 00, W sf.se), but there are also a good number of cinemas the entire length of Kungsgatan between
Sveavägen and Birger Jarlsgatan, which are always very lively on Saturday night. Tickets cost around 150kr and films are
never dubbed into Swedish.
SWIMMING IN STOCKHOLM
The water in Stockholm is clean and perfect for swimming during the long days of summer.
The best beaches are all west of the city centre: Långholmens strandbad to the west of
Västerbron bridge on Långholmen, rocky Klippbadet to the east of the bridge and across on
Kungsholmen at Smeddsudden , with a large grassy area for sunbathing; take bus #4.
Alternatively, Södermalm is the place to go for swimming pools; there are three in fairly close
proximity: Forsgrénskabadet in Medborgarplatsen ( T 08 508 403 15; Medborgarplatsen
T-bana); Erikdalsbadet, Hammarby Slussväg 20, ( T 08 508 402 50; Skanstull T-bana), which has
an open-air pool; and the wonderful little Liljeholmsbadet, Bergsundsgatan 2, ( T 08 668 67 80;
Hornstull T-bana), a pool in a boat-like pontoon contraption that floats in Lake Mälaren and has
nude swimming for women on Mondays, for men on Fridays, though it is closed mid-June to
mid-August; the water here is always 30°C. For uno cial nude bathing, head out to one of the
islands in the archipelago and find your own private spot.
The best gay beach is at Kärsön (Brommaplan T-bana then any bus towards
Drottningholm palace). Get off at the stop over the bridge, Brostugan, and walk to the right
along the water's edge.
