DRINKING
As elsewhere in Sweden, the majority of Stockholmers do their drinking and eating together, and all of the places listed
below also serve food - Södermalm is by far the best place to head for. The scourge of Swedish nightlife - high alcohol
prices - has been neutralized in recent years due to increased competition. The tired old stories about drinking requiring a
second mortgage are quite simply no longer true. Happy hours or “After work”, as they're also known, at various places also
throw up some bargains - watch out for signs outside bars and pubs advertising their particular times. Gay bars are few
and far between: those that do exist are listed below.

GREATER STOCKHOLM
Storstad Odengatan 41 T 08 673 38 00; Rådmansgatan
T-bana; map pp.44-45. Light and airy lounge and bar
with high ceilings that is a firm favourite for Stockholm's
media pack and local celebrities. Packed with a credit-card-
flashing crowd at weekends. Mon-Thurs 4pm-1am, Fri
4pm-3am, Sat 6pm-3am.
Tranan Karlbergsvägen 14 T 08 527 281 00; Sankt
Eriksplan T-bana; map pp.44-45. An atmospheric old
workers' beer hall housed in a basement that's been in
operation since 1929. One of Stockholm's best and most
popular drinking holes with live music in the basement bar.
Mon-Thurs 5pm-midnight, Fri & Sat 5pm-1am, Sun
5-11pm.
SÖDERMALM
Akkurat Hornsgatan 18 T 08 644 00 15; Slussen
T-bana; map p.62. This famous spot is known for its 280
different whiskies and extensive beer selection on tap and
by the bottle, including an impressive array of Belgian
varieties. Often has live music at weekends. Mon 11am-
midnight, Tues-Fri 11am-1am, Sat 3pm-1am, Sun
6pm-1am.
Fenix Götgatan 40 T 08 640 45; Slussen T-bana,
Götgatan exit; map p.62. A loud and brash American-
style bar that's always packed with clientele who are here
for the sole purpose of drinking large quantities of beer -
and practising their latest chat-up lines in English. Mon-
Thurs 4pm-1am, Fri 1pm-1am, Sat & Sun noon-1am.
Gröne Jägaren Götgatan 64 T 08 640 96 00;
Medborgarplatsen T-bana; map p.62. An inordinately
popular, and at times, rather drunken bar with some of the
cheapest beer in the capital - the clientele is predominantly
male and talk here is mainly of women, football and cars.
Regular karaoke and pub quizzes. Mon-Fri 10.30am-1am,
Sat & Sun 11am-1am.
H20/Eld Tjärhovsgatan 4 T 08 643 03 80;
Medborgarplatsen T-bana; map p.62. Two basement
bars underneath the Kvarnen beer hall. H20 is decorated
entirely in blue and white ceramic tiles, and is a place to
hang out at the bar whilst Eld has a resident DJ most nights
of the week. Both attract Stockholm's well-dressed, well-
heeled and well-tipsy. Mon-Fri 11am-3am, Sat & Sun
5pm-3am.
Kvarnen Tjärhovsgatan 4 T 08 643 03 80;
Medborgarplatsen T-bana; map p.62. Busy beer hall on
the same site as H20/Eld ; this one, at ground level, is a
favourite haunt of football fans supporting Hammarby,
who come here to celebrate their team's every win and
defeat. Mon-Fri 11am-3am, Sat & Sun 5pm-3am.
Pelikan Blekingegatan 40 T 08 556 090 90; Skanstull
T-bana; map p.62. Long-established beer hall is full of
character - and characters - and is one of the city's most
satisfying and relaxing places for an evening's drinking. It's
a good place to strike up a conversation with local Swedes.
Mon-Thurs 5pm-midnight, Fri & Sat 5pm-1am, Sun
5pm-midnight.
CENTRAL STOCKHOLM
Berns Berzelii Park, Nybroplan T 08 566 322 22;
Kungsträdgården T-bana; map p.47 . One of the chicest
bars in town, with decor by the British designer Sir Terence
Conran. Originally made famous by writer August
Strindberg, who picked up character ideas here for his
novel, The Red Room . Mon-Wed & Sun 11.30am-1am,
Thurs-Sat 11.30am-3am.
Dubliner Holländargatan 1 T 08 679 77 07; Hötorget
T-bana; map p.47. One of the busiest Irish pubs in town
with a fantastically large selection of foreign beers on tap
and by the bottle, with live music most evenings, often
Irish folk. Mon-Thurs 11am-1am, Fri 11am-3am, Sat
noon-3am, Sun 1-10pm.
Kleins Kornhamnstorg 51 T 08 20 99 45; Gamla Stan
T-bana; map p.47. One of the most popular bars in Gamla
Stan, though its tiny dimensions mean it can get a bit
cramped. Definitely worth a look, though be sure to keep
your eye on your possessions. Mon-Fri 4pm-3am, Sat &
Sun 2pm-3am.
Torget Mälartorget 13 T 08 20 55 60; Gamla Stan
T-bana; map p.47. This elegant place is Stockholm's main
gay bar, good for a drink at any time, and always busy. The
modern Swedish food here is justifiably popular, so always
reserve ahead if you want to eat. Mon-Thurs 5pm-1am,
Fri-Sun 4pm-1am.
Wirströms Stora Nygatan 13 T 08 21 28 74; Gamla
Stan T-bana; map p.47. A great favourite among
Stockholm's ex-pat community who come here to talk
