respected vegetarian restaurant whose food is often quite
spicy and Middle Eastern in style. Buffet lunches go for 90kr

plenty of seafood in posh 1930s surroundings. Reckon on

in Stockholm. Go up to the fish counter and choose the

compact contemporary Swedish bistro with stark white
walls and comfy sofas, serving up delicious home-cooking
dishes such as Wallenbergare, meatballs and gravad lax in
the range 110-245kr; home-baked sourdough bread, too.

Bistro Ruby and Grill Ruby Österlånggatan 14 T 08

long-established French place, tastefully done up in
Parisian style with red walls covered with artwork. Mains,
such as steak frites or tenderloin with mustard cream, cost
175-345kr. Next door, though in the same building, is Grill
Ruby , which serves up TexMex and American-style charcoal
grills of meat and fish (179-499kr) and weekend brunches.
Both daily 5pm till late, Bistro Ruby closed Sun.

T-bana; map p.47. Top-floor café inside Kulturhuset with
superb views over central Stockholm (try to get one of the
window tables). Lunch is dependable and inexpensive,
though it's the apple pie and vanilla sauce that's the real
winner. Tues-Fri 11am-8pm, Sat 11am-6pm, Sun
11am-5pm.
Chokladkoppen Stortorget 18; Gamla Stan T-bana;
map p.47. A fabulous, if rather cramped, café overlooking
Gamla Stan's grand old square, specializing in white-
chocolate cheesecake and blueberry pie. Also has tasty
salmon quiches and light lunch dishes and is justifiably
popular with the city's gay lunchgoers. Daily 9am-11pm.
Den Gyldene Freden Österlånggatan 51 T 08 24 97
60; Gamla Stan T-bana; map p.47. Opened in 1722,
Stockholm's oldest restaurant is housed in a combination of
vaulted cellars and regular serving rooms whose interiors
are pure eighteenth century. Traditional Swedish mains
such as pike-perch for around 300kr, or better-value
125kr.

Konditori Kungstornet Kungsgatan 28; Hötorget
T-bana; map p.47. Busy and rather small retro-style coffee
house with wood panelling, dark-green sofas and an
upstairs jukebox which first opened in the 1930s. Excellent
cakes and pastries as well as substantial sandwiches.

Le Rouge Österlånggatan 17 T 08 505 244 60; Gamla
Stan T-bana; map p.47. A gloriously OTT Moulin Rouge-
style bistro, inspired by nineteenth-century Paris, where
red is de rigueur : everything from the drapes to the sofas
are bright red. Tuna steak is 265kr, moules frites 135kr and

p.47. A sound choice for Swedish home cooking served
around the bar in this charming little place which resembles
the snug of a British pub: meatballs in a cream sauce with
gherkins (160kr) and mixed herring platter (150kr) are
