Advance bookings for places to stay in Gällivare are a good idea from mid-June to mid-August, when, thanks to its
strategic location at the junction of two major rail routes, the town receives trainloads of backpackers.

smart, tastefully decorated rooms and a good restaurant;
sit in the sau na and enjoy view s of the station and the main

.se. A new modern hotel with sixty smart, Scandinavian-
style doubles in a modern block of red brick resembling a
school, close to the swimming pool. There's also a decent
sauna on site and free coffee and nibbles available.

Gällivare; offering bright and airy hostel-standard rooms,
sharing facilities, but with ki tchen and sauna access, handy

EATING AND DRINKING
Husmans Malmbergsvägen 1 T 0970 170 30. A simple
cafeteria-style place with various Swedish home-style
dishes on the menu, plus a variety of burgers, sausages,
lasagne and schnitzel: oddly, lunch here is served all day.
Mains from around 75kr. Mon-Fri 9am-9pm, Sat & Sun
11am-8pm.
Manuella Storgatan 9 T 0970/123 80. Another of
Gällivare's fast-food outlets, though this one tries hard to
be an Italian restaurant, serving a range of pizzas (75kr),
including deep-pan varieties, as well as a couple of steaks
around
Sofias Kök Storgatan 19 T 0970 554 50. The place in
Gällivare for traditional home cooking, such as pea soup
with pancakes, pork loin with mushrooms and pan-fried
saithe with prawns, that really pulls in the punters. Now a
popular place for a beer, too. Mon-Fri 7.30am-1am, Sat
& Sun 10.30am-3am.
Strandcaféet Malmbergsvägen 2. Beautifully located
campsite café right by the graceful Vassara River with a
small range of open sandwiches, cakes and light lunches of
quiches, baked potatoes and salads. June-Aug daily
10am-10pm.
Vetehatten Storgatan 16 T 0970 666 30. A Gällivare
institution, right in the town centre and serving up a
selection of sandwiches and gooey cakes. There's also the
possibility to sit outside here on Gällivare's main shopping
street

longing for Thai or Indonesian food, make a beeline to this
newly opened restaurant which is delighting the people of
Gällivare with the likes of nasi goreng and green chicken

Swedish Lapland's national parks
It's not a good idea to go hiking in the national parks of northern Sweden on a whim.
Even for experienced walkers, the going can be tough and uncomfortable in parts,
downright treacherous in others. The best time to go hiking is from late June to
September: during May and early June the ground is still very wet and boggy as a result
of the rapid snow melt. Once the snow has gone, wild flowers burst into bloom,
making the most of the short summer months. The weather is very changeable - one
moment it can be hot and sunny, the next cold and rainy - and snow showers are not
uncommon in summer.
Mosquitoes are a real problem: it's difficult to describe the utter misery of being
covered in a blanket of insects, your eyes, ears and nose full of the creatures. Yet the
beautiful landscape here is one of the last wilderness areas left in Europe - it's one vast
