the market can be a real spectacle, as man and beast battle it out on a specially
marked-out ice track. The reindeer, however, often have other ideas and every now
and then veer off with great alacrity into the crowd, sending spectators fleeing for
cover. A smaller, historical market is held on the proceeding Monday to Wednesday,
when people dress in traditional costume and put on various theatrical performances.
ARRIVAL
JOKKMOKK
By public transport From Arvidsjaur, 161km away, it's a
3hr 30min journey to Jokkmokk on the Inlandsbanan, or
just over 2hr on the Inlandsexpressen bus. If you're arriving
here for the Winter Market, take the train to Murjek
(between Boden and Gällivare), from where bus #43 runs
west to Jokkmokk.

access and all sorts of literature useful for planning a hike in
the region.
Fishing During the summer, Talvatissjön, the lake behind
Hotel Jokkmokk (see below), is the preferred spot for
catching Arctic char and rainbow trout. To fish here you'll
need a permit ( (fiskekort), ), available from the tourist office.
There's a barbecue on the lakeside behind the hotel, should
you catch anything.
Canoeing It's possible to go canoeing on the unspoilt
surrounding lakes and rivers as well as hiking in the nearby
national parks. For more information and bookings, contact
Jokkmokkguiderna ( T 0971 122 20, W jokkmokkguiderna
.com), based in the village of Skabram, 3km west of
Jokkmokk. They'll collect you from Jokkmokk once you've
made a firm booking.
ACCOMMODATION
Since accommodation options in Jokkmokk are rather limited, it's a good idea to book ahead, particularly during the
summer months when the Inlandsbanan is running, as well as during the Winter Market, when a reservation is required at
least two years in advance (if Jokkmokk is full, try looking for rooms in Arvidsjaur and Gällivare). That said, the tourist office
arranges simple dormitory accommodation in the local school for around 250kr per person, and puts together a list of
private rooms at 500kr per person.

station, the simple, brightly decorated en-suite rooms here
are clean and tidy if lacking in character. There's an
attractive saun a suite and a very good restaurant on site.

here (ask for one with a lake view) are modern and
comfortable. The sauna suite of red-and-white tiles in the
basement is on e of the best in northern Sweden.

River, 3km southeast of town of Route 97 towards Luleå,
this pleasant campsite also has cabins. The best wa y to ge t

Jokkmokk youth hostel Åsgatan 20 T 0971 559 77,
W jokkmokkhostel.com. This wonderful old house,
surrounded by a pretty garden, has a great central location
and cosy double rooms as well as dorms. However , it fills
fast so i it's wis e to book well in advance. Dorms 180kr ,
doubles 470kr
EATING AND DRINKING
Ájtte museum Kyrkogatan 3 T 0971 170 70. For
traditional northern Swedish and Sámi home cooking,
head for the restaurant inside the museum, where lunch
deals go for 75kr; there are also a couple of reindeer dishes
on the menu. Mon-Fri 9am-4pm.
City Konditoriet Storgatan 28 T 0971 106 50. For
pastries and a cup of coffee, try this place on Jokkmokk's
main street which also serves up good sandwiches and
other light snacks such as quiches and cakes. Mon-Fri
6am-5pm, Sat 9am-2pm.
Gästis Herrevägen 1 T 0971 100 12. You'll find some of
the best food in the whole of Swedish Lapland served up
here: reindeer steak, Arctic char and other local delicacies
are usually on the changing menu but the house speciality
is a juicy plankstek (planked steak) with accompaniments.
Reckon on 200kr per main course. Mon-Fri 10.30am-2pm
& daily 6-10pm.
Kowloon Föreningsgatan 3 T 0971 100 85. At this
cheap and cheerful restaurant, lunch is 65kr and Chinese
