Storlien
Just 6km from the Norwegian border and linked to Åre by infrequent train, tiny
STORLIEN is an excellent place to stop if you're into hiking, surrounded as it is by
rugged, scenic terrain. The southern stretch of the Kungsleden (see p.343) starts here
and winds its way south via Sweden's southernmost glacier on the slopes of
Helagsfjället, continuing on to Tänndalen and Grövelsjön, terminating on the hills
above Sälen. Storlien is also prime berry-picking territory (the rare cloudberry grows
here); mushrooms can also be found in great numbers hereabouts, in particular the
delicious chanterelle. Storlien is little more than a couple of streets and a supermarket
amid open countryside.
