EATING AND DRINKING
Make no mistake, Härnösand may be an architectural feast, but its culinary prowess most certainly isn't. Eating places are
thin on the ground and, sadly, rather uninspiring, bar one outstanding exception.
New China Restaurant Storgatan 34 T 0611 136 06.
A run-of-the-mill Asian restaurant with a decent range of
predictable Chinese mains (from 88kr) as well as better
Indonesian ones (from 125kr). It's one of the most popular
places in town for lunch. Mon-Thurs 11am-9pm, Fri
11am-10pm, Sat 1-10pm, Sun 1-9pm.
Östanbäckens Pizzeria Östanbäcksgatan 1 T 0611 50
05 52. This neighbourhood pizzeria and grill restaurant is a
good bet for tasty pizzas from 60kr as well as pasta dishes
(65-70kr), salmon fillet (85kr) and pork steak (90kr). It
also has a choice of burgers from 60kr. Mon-Sat
11am-10pm, Sun 11am-9pm.
Ruom Thai Storgatan 34 T 0611 55 60 42. Next door to
New China , this rather cavernous and dingy Thai restaurant
serves up mains such as green chicken curry for 89-119kr;
the quality of the food isn't bad but it's not overly authentic.
There's takeaway service, too. Mon-Thurs 11am-9pm,
Fri 11am-10pm, Sat noon-9pm.
Rutiga Dukan Västra Kyrkogatan 1. A snug and cosy
café below the cathedral that's a great place for a cup of
coffee and good home-baked pastries. Also has good-value
weekday lunch specials which are worth seeking out.
Mon-Fri 6.30am-6pm, Sat 10am-4pm.
Vägg i Vägg Brunnshusgatan 1 T 0611 164 40. Head
and shoulders above any other restaurant in Härnösand,
this elegant place is beautifully located in a timber lodge
built in 1871. It serves well-prepared mains such as venison
fillet, local Arctic char and Wallenbergare for 150kr-255kr.
Mon-Sat 6pm-midnight.
Höga Kusten - the High Coast
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in late 2000, HÖGA KUSTEN ( W highcoast
.net), or the High Coast, is the highlight of any trip up the Bothnian coast. This stretch
