In-Depth Information
walk up Storgatan, cross over the main bridge and follow the sign to the youth hostel.
If you'd prefer to spare your legs, any bus for Norra Berget will take you up there. The
view on a clear day is fantastic, giving a fresh perspective on the city's planned
structure and the restrictive nature of its location, hemmed in on three sides by hills
and the sea. From here you can see straight across to Södra Berget, the southern hill,
with its winter ski slopes.
The viewing tower
The best views can be had from the top of the viewing tower which has stood on this
spot since 1897. Originally made entirely from wood, the tower fell victim over the
years to the Swedish winter. By the 1930s it was in such poor condition that during
one particularly severe autumn storm, the entire thing blew down; the present concrete
replacement, 22m high, dates from 1954.
Norra Bergets Hantverksmuseum
Norra Bergets Handicrafts Museum • Norra Berget • Daily 11am-5pm • 20kr
he Norra Bergets Hantverksmuseum is an open-air handicrafts museum with the
usual selection of twee wooden huts and assorted activities, though you can often
try your hand at baking some tunnbröd , the thin bread that's typical of northern
Sweden. The idea is to roll out your dough extra thin, brush off as much flour as
you can, slip the bread into the oven on a big, wooden pizza-type paddle, and count
slowly to five.
