For a day-trip from Hudiksvall, head southeast out to the beautiful and unspoilt
Hornslandet peninsula
, renowned for its quaint fishing villages of red wooden cottages
and sandy
beaches
. This egg-shaped chunk of land is the geological result of
continuous land rise since the last Ice Age; as recently as the Viking era, the Arnösund
sound, which once separated Hornslandet from the mainland, was easily navigable and
remained an important channel for seafarers until the tenth century. Today, though, the
sound has silted up and the peninsula is effectively an extension of the Bothnian coast.
This whole area is rich in flora and fauna, as well as being ideal for swimming, fishing
and walking; there are two villages to head for in particular:
