in a building dating from 1887 which once served as Visby's
cinema. All rooms are individ ually decorated though some

1960, this former railway hotel, now a youth hostel, is still
in operation with modern, comfortable rooms, though

decorated in tasteful whites and greys make up this youth
hostel in an atmospheric old house dating from the 1600s.

- follow the cycle path that runs through the Botanical
Gardens along the seafront. It's imperative to book early to
ensure a place here as this campsite is extremely p opular .

EATING, DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Adelsgatan is lined with cafés and snack bars . At lunchtime, the eating places at Wallérsplats, the square at Adelsgatan's
northern end, and Hästgatan, the street leading off the square to the southwest, are particularly busy; Strandgatan is the
focus of Visby dining in the evening, though Hästgatan also boasts a number of places for dinner. For inexpensive eating at
night, lively Donnersplats has lots of stalls selling takeaway food during summer. Youthful nightlife is mainly down at
the harbour.

The result is simply irresistible, if expensive: starters are

Bakfickan Storatorget 1 T 0498 27 18 07 . A quiet,
relaxed little restaurant with a tiled interior that specializes
in some of the best seafood in town. The fried Baltic herring
with mashed potato (134kr) is superb, so, too, fish soup
with aioli (149kr). Starters from 73kr. Mon-Fri
11am-11pm, Sat & Sun noon-11pm.
Bolaget Storatorget 6 T 0498 21 50 80. A delightful,
though extremely small French bistro right on the main
square with a good range of French classics: confit de
canard (199kr), bouillabaisse (189kr) and a delicious warm
goat's cheese starter (99kr) are all good bets. Tues-Fri
11.30am till late, Sat & Sun 1pm till late .

66 55. A justifiably popular bistro decked out with
mosaic tiles serves everything from solid Swedish home
cooking (meatballs 175kr, whitefish roe 190kr) to more
upmarket, sophisticated meat and fish dishes (175-
275kr). A great place, too, for an after-dinner drink.

CAFÉS
Ì Gula Huset Tranhusgatan 2 T 0498 24 96 90. Close
to the Botanical Gardens and a favourite amongst locals
who flock here on sunny weekends: a cosy garden café
outside a vine-covered cottage, deservedly well known for
delicious port-wine cake with cream and fruit (48kr). Sat &
Sun noon-5pm.
Skafferiet Adelsgatan 38 T 0498 21 45 97. Appealing,
characterful café in a lovely eighteenth-century house with
coarsely hewn timber walls, chequered curtains and a lush
garden at the back. Baked potatoes, great cakes and vast,
generously filled baguettes which suffice for a full meal.
Tues-Fri 11am-5pm, Sat 11am-4.30pm.
St Hans Café St Hansplan 2 T 0498 21 07 72. Between
May and Sept this café has outdoor seating in the rear
garden amid a series of atmospheric medieval church ruins
- for atmosphere it's hard to beat. Terrific cakes, muffins
and pies as well as light lunches. Mon-Fri 10am-6pm.
