Lake Munksjön
its heart is the Radiomuséet , dedicated to the memory of Erik Karlson from nearby
Huskvarna, who built his first radio receiver in 1923 aged 14, and later opened one of
Sweden's first radio stores just three months after the national broadcaster, Sveriges
Radio, had taken to the air. Stuffed to the gills, the museum contains seemingly every
type of radio, from early crystal sets to reel-to-reel tape recorders and mobile phones,
and is a real trip down memory lane.

Aside from the Radiomuséet, the only museum in town worth bothering with is
Jönköpings läns museum , on the east side of the canal between lakes Vättern and
Munksjön. A mishmash of oddities, with exhibits ranging from posters showing
Swedish support for Che Guevara through garden chairs throughout the ages to
samovars and doll's houses, the place is like a well-stocked junk shop. The best part is
the well-lit collection of paintings and drawings by John Bauer , a local artist who
enthralled generations of Swedes with his Tolkienesque representations of gnomes and
trolls in the Bland tomtar och troll , a well-known series of Swedish children's topics
which were published around Christmas between 1907 and 1915.
Arkivhuset
Mon-Fri 9am-7pm, Sat & Sun 11am-3pm • Free
To the left of the main entrance to the museum, beyond the reference library (which is
worth a stop if you want to peruse the remarkable range of foreign-language
newspapers) , you'll find an account of Jönköping's history from 1200 or so onwards in
old maps, paintings and models housed in a building known as Arkivhuset - worth a
look on a rainy day.
