of gold coins is also displayed, but it's the incredibly preserved clothing - hats, jackets,
buckled leather shoes and even silk bows and cufflinks - which bring this exceptional
show to life. Check out, too, the remarkable twelve pewter flasks dating from the
mid-1600s which, when salvaged, still contained their original barley-based akvavit
with an alcohol content of 41.1 percent. The wreck site, the size of half a football pitch,
is still being explored and yields around one thousand items each year.

By train Kalmar's train station is on Stationsgatan, at the
southern end of the new town on the island of
Kvarnholmen. Change at Emmaboda for trains to
Kristianstad.
Destinations Copenhagen via Kastrup airport (10 daily;
3hr 45min); Emmaboda (hourly; 45min); Gothenburg
(5 daily; 4hr); Malmö (10 daily; 3hr 15min); Växjo
(10 daily; 1hr).

ACCOMMODATION
Kalmar has several really attractive central hotels with good summer discounts, though there's little to choose from in
terms of price. Undoubtedly, the Baroque splendour of the main square is the location of choice.

lacking in elegance, but with friendly, efficient service,
comfortable en-suite rooms and an altogether

W profilhotels.se. Dating from 1906, this lovely old
building with a stuccoed facade in Art Nouveau style is a
tasteful mix of old and new, though sadly many rooms
have cheap carpets and unstylish fur nishings, detra cting

waterfront storehouse, the wooden beams of this rambling
old building add to the cosiness of the compact modern
rooms, many of which have views out over the harbour. A

W frimurarehotellet.com. Rather grand hotel, set in a
castle-like building from 1878 owned by the Freemasons
(hence the name: frimurare is Swedish for “freemason”)
and offering su mptuous rooms with period furniture.

though not the priciest - of Kalmar's hotels, overlooking
the castle across the bridge. The authentic interior is
extremely tasteful, with a charming co nservatory area a nd

CAMPING
Stensö Camping 3km from the centre at Stensövägen,

closest bus stop. As well as camping, there are cabins with

EATING, DRINKING AND NIGHTLIFE
Athena Norra Långgatan 8 T 0480 280 88. A bright and
airy Greek restaurant with tasty traditional fare at sensible
prices such as moussaka (135kr) or beef souvlaki (169kr), as
well as various salads (98-109kr) and pasta dishes (98-
135kr). Mon-Thurs 11am-10pm, Fri 11am-11pm, Sat
noon-11pm, Sun 1-9pm.

Built right by the water on squat stilts with great views out
over the harbour, this swish but pleasantly informal place
offers such delights as grilled tuna in coconut sauce
(235kr), fried Baltic herring with lingonberries (149kr) and
