EATING AND DRINKING
Karlskrona is surprisingly poor for good restaurants - most proper eating places are along Ronnebygatan - and, even more
strangely given its location, has almost nothing in the way of decent fish places.
Café Tre G Landbrogatan 9 T 0455 31 03 33. Opposite
Hoglands Park, with black-and-white photographs hung
on the walls, this stylish café does a good range of baked
potatoes and pasta salads as well as cakes and sandwiches.
The city's only café open on a Sunday. Mon-Fri 9am-9pm,
Sat 9am-6pm, Sun 10am-6pm.
Castello Stortorget 5 3 T 0455 255 73. Attached to the
Kulenovic museum and with great views over the Baroque
splendour of the main square, this is a sound choice for
expertly cooked pasta dishes as well as mains (89-219kr)
like chicken in basil sauce and steak in calvados. Daily
11am-6pm; closed Sun Sept-May.
Fox and Anchor Norra Smedjegatan 1 T 0455 229 10.
British-style drinking den serving 54 different types of beer
and over 200 whisky varieties. There's also some decent
grub: burgers, fish & chips and steaks; reckon on around
150kr for something substantial. Mon & Tues 5-11pm,
Wed 5pm-midnight, Thurs 5pm-1am, Fri 4pm-1am,
Sat 6pm-1am.
Lisas Sjökrog Skeppsbrokajen T 0455 61 83 83. If you
want to eat fish in Karlskrona, this is the place to come. A
floating restaurant with great views of the marina serving
unusual dishes like pan-fried swordfish in chilli coconut
sauce as well as more mainstream choices such as plaice and
zander. Mains around 200kr. Mon-Fri 11.30am-11pm,
Sat noon-11pm, Sun noon-10pm.
Michelangelo Ronnebygatan 29 T 0455 121 95. With
copies of Renaissance paintings on the rough brick walls, this
elegant Italian restaurant has a good choice of fine cuisine:
meat and fish dishes, such as braised veal medallions with
pancetta and sage, are 159-225kr. Mon-Fri 11.30am-2pm
& 5-11pm, Sat 5-11pm, Sun 4-10pm.
Montmartre Ronnebygatan 18 T 0455 31 18 33. With
rough brick walls and velvet drapes, this candlelit bistro is
the cosiest of all the Italian places in town: huge pizzas for
71-98kr, pasta at 82-95kr and meat mains like steak
marinated in garlic at 139-219kr. Mon-Fri 4-10.30pm,
Sat 1-10.30pm, Sun 1-9.30pm.

good deli and café combined where you can buy air-dried
hams, meats, cheeses for picnics as well as filled baguettes,
croissants, great coffees and the best hot chocolate in town.
Excellent lunch buffet, too. Mon-Fri 10am-6pm, Sat
10am-3pm.
Kalmar
Delightful, breezy KALMAR , set on a huddle of islands at the southeastern edge of
Småland province, has treasures enough to make it one of southern Sweden's most
delightful towns. Chief among its highlights are the Länsmuseum , home to an
exhibition on the sunken warship, the Kronan , and an exquisite fourteenth-century
castle , Scandinavia's finest preserved Renaissance palace. The town is also perfectly sited
for reaching the Baltic island of Öland (see p.203), which is just 6km away across the
connecting bridge.
