just south of Stora torg, located in a rather splendid
building that was once home to a bank, retaining its
original ire places and parq uet floors; the vaults are now a

offers excellent friendly service and well-equipped en-suite
rooms, with supremely comfortable beds, wooden floors
and the best prices in town. Rooms are indi vidually
decorated with inspiration from Kristianstad's past. 649kr

opulence in this old Freemasons' hall; the rooms, though,
are a let-down with cheap, modern dec or that is rather out

EATING AND DRINKING
Eating in Kristianstad throws up several opportunities, though the prettiest café, Fornstugan , is only open during the short
summer season. Otherwise, there's a fair range of restaurants clustered around the central square.

Inordinately popular at lunchtime when takeaway
(including pizza) is the best option. Tues-Fri 11am-10pm,
Sat & Sun noon-10pm.
Steakhouse Nya Boulevarden 6A T 044 12 00 20. This
first-floor restaurant overlooking the main square
specializes in all kind of barbecued meat dishes such as
veal fillets, T-bone steaks and marinated pork (around
250kr). However, there's also a number of main-course
salads for 99kr. Mon-Thurs 5-10.30pm, Fri & Sat
5-11pm, Sun 5-10pm.
CAFÉS AND RESTAURANTS
Banken Östra Storgatan 27 T 044 10 20 23. In the old
Riksbanken building, this is one of the most popular of the
town's restaurant-cum-bars. The menu features burgers
(145kr), spare ribs (199kr) and chicken skewers (145kr).
There's 20 percent of a range of food Wed-Fri until 7pm.
Tues 5pm-midnight, Wed 5pm-2am, Thurs 5pm-1am,
Fri 4pm-3am, Sat 5pm-3am.
Duvander Hesslegatan 6. A classic and central konditori
with high ceilings and ornate cornices which has been
serving cakes and meringues since 1934. It's a popular
place for lunch when people come for pasta salads,
sandwiches, soup and quiche. Mon-Fri 7.30am-7pm,
Sat 8am-5pm, Sun 10am-5pm.
Fornstugan Tivoli Park. An atmospheric and elaborately
carved Hansel-and-Gretel lodge in the middle of the park
which is Kristianstad's most pleasant café; the outdoor
seating area opens in fine weather, though the whole place
closes if it rains. Serves waffles, coffee and cakes. May-Aug
daily 11.30am-6.30pm.
Kippers Källare Östra Storgatan 9 T 044 10 62 00. An
atmospheric choice in a vaulted cellar dating from 1615
and once regularly frequented by Danish King Christian IV.
It specializes in tapas of all varieties (35-105kr) but also
has well-prepared steaks around 265kr. Tues & Thurs
6-11pm, Wed 6pm-1am, Fri & Sat 6pm-3am.
La Finestra Västra Storgatan 30 T 044 20 97 20. A
compact Italian place with bar stools it serves foccacia,

Harry's Bar Östra Storgatan 9 T 044 10 62 00. For a
convivial drink, try this place (not belonging to the chain
Harry's ), popular with a 30-something crowd. There's
also a variety of bar snacks including a mouthwatering
fish burger with fennel coleslaw and caper sauce
(155kr). Tues & Thurs 6-11pm, Wed 6pm-1am, Fri &
Sat 6pm-3am.
Hesslegatans kök och bar Hesslegatan 1A T 044 21
09 80. The largest selection of beers in town (around 70 or
so in total from places ranging from China to Iceland) is to
be found at this attractive bar, whose interior is hung with
black lanterns and features motifs of horsemen with their
mounts. Mon, Tues & Thurs 11.30am-2pm, Wed
11.30am-2pm & 6-10pm, Fri 11.30am-2pm &
6pm-2am, Sat 6pm-2am.
