In-Depth Information
THE SOUTHWEST LUND
Lunds Universitets Historiska Museum
Lund University Historical Museum • Kraftstorg 12 • Tues-Fri 11am-4pm, Sun noon-4pm • 50kr • W luhm.lu.se
Just behind the cathedral, the Lunds Universitets Historiska Museum is for the most part
rather dull unless you have a specialist interest in ecclesiastical history. The statues from
Skåne's churches, in the medieval exhibition, deserve a look though, mainly because of
the way they are arranged. The crowd of Jesuses hanging on crosses have an ominous
quality worthy of Hitchcock, while in the next room all the Madonnas are paired of
with the baby Jesuses.

Kulturen
Tegnerplatsen • Mid-April to Sept daily 11am-5pm; Oct to mid-April Tues-Sun noon-4pm • 90kr; June-Aug 120kr • W kulturen.com
A few minutes' walk from the Lunds Universitets Historiska Museum is the town's best
museum, Kulturen . It's easy to spend the best part of a day just wandering around this
privately owned open-air museum, a virtual town of perfectly preserved cottages, farms,
merchants' houses, gardens and even churches, brought from seven Swedish regions
and encompassing as many centuries.
Skissernas Museum
Museum of Sketches • Finngatan 2 • Tues-Sun noon-5pm, Wed until 9pm • 50kr • W adk.lu.se
A few streets north from the cathedral, the Skissernas Museum houses a fascinating
collection of around 25,000 preliminary sketches and original maquettes of works of
art from around the world. An ever-changing selection of them is displayed; usually
one room is full of work by all the major Swedish artists, while in another are sketches
by international giants, such as Chagall, Matisse, Léger, Miró and Dufy; the best-
known sculptural sketches here are by Picasso and Henry Moore. Outside, the
sculptures on display include preliminary versions of pieces found in town squares all
over Sweden, including those by Bror Marklund.
Botanical Gardens
Östra Vallgatan 20 • Daily 6am-8pm, greenhouses noon-3pm • Free
An antidote to museum fatigue, the Botanical Gardens are as much a venue for
picnicking and chilling out as a botanical experience. The greenhouses and rock
gardens are the best areas to view; the rarest sights here are the Far Eastern paper-
mulberry trees and the huge tulip trees - part of the same family as magnolias - with
masses of flowers in June.
