the end of the nineteenth century. When St Laurentii kyrka was reconsecrated in the

Sculptures
Falkenberg is full of quirky sculptures that make for amusing viewing. Right outside
Falkenberg Museum you'll find a diverting piece called Wall , which you may not realize
is a sculpture at all. Per Kirkeby, a celebrated Danish artist, built the two brick walls
here for a major exhibition in 1997, to close off the wide space below the museum
building down to the river. A series of entrances and window openings are designed to
let shadows fall at striking angles - though predictably, the more conservative locals
loathe the piece. The most fun sculpture is one taking up the whole wall at the corner
of Nygatan and Torggatan in the centre: Drömbanken , by Walter Bengtsson, is a witty,
surrealist explosion of naked women, cats, mutant elks, bare feet and beds.
Fotomuseum Olympia
Sandgatan 13A • Tues-Thurs 2-6pm, Sun 2-5pm • 40kr
Falkenberg boasts the rather unusual Fotomuseum Olympia , home of the town's first
purpose-built cinema which opened in 1912. It has over one thousand cameras and a
remarkable collection of cinematic paraphernalia, including some superb local peasant
portraits taken in 1898. The oldest pictures on show are English and date back to the
1840s. There's also an impressive section on Sweden's well-loved author Selma Lagerlöf
at her home in Mårbacka in Värmland (see p.142).
