Varberg
More atmospheric than any other town in Halland, the fashionable little nineteenth-
century bathing resort of VARBERG boasts surprisingly varied sights - its imposing
fortress the most striking - a laidback atmosphere and plenty of good places to eat.
The rocky coastline becomes sandier heading south, and there are plenty of
opportunities for bathing and windsurfing. All of Varberg's sights are concentrated
along or near the seafront, although in summer the main square, Stortorget, throngs
with markets and pavement cafés.
The fortress

The thirteenth-century moated fortress , set on a rocky promontory, is Varberg's most
prominent attraction. It was home to the Swedish king Magnus Eriksson, who signed
