BOAT TRIPS FROM NYKÖPING
During the summer months M/S Storsand (late June to late Aug Mon, Tues & Wed at 11am and
3pm; 170kr return; buy tickets onboard; W trosarederi.se) sails out of the town's tiny harbour
bound for the countless rocks, skerries and islands that make up the Nyköping archipelago.
LÅNGSKÄR AND ÅLÖ
After just forty minutes, the boat puts in at Långskär , which, as its Swedish name suggests,
is a long sliver of an island and a great place to jump ashore and explore. An unspoilt haven
of smooth rocks, ideal for sunbathing, and secluded bays, the island is a perfect getaway.
From Långskär, it's another hour to larger, though still modestly sized Ålö, which supported
a solitary farm for two hundred years until the 1950s. Today, it's another unspoilt island
just waiting to be explored; take a picnic and wander off in search of your own
smultronställe ” as the Swedes call it, literally “a place where the wild strawberries grow” -
a place of perfect peace.
BOAT RENTAL IN NYKÖPING
A great way to explore the islands and coastline around Nyköping is to get out on the water
yourself. Between May and September you can rent canoes from Gästhamnen Nyköping at the
seaward end of the harbour ( T 0155 21 72 30 or T 070 659 21 96, W www.nykopingsgasthamn
.se); ask for the harbour master.
