There were shoe shops and an apothecary selling obscure remedies for all sorts of ailments.
One establishment seemed to have the skin and entrails of every form of endangered spe-
cies hanging from the ceiling.
Inevitably, and given the role of tourism in the local economy, you could purchase claimed
antiquities and other souvenirs all of which were pressed upon you as you walked by. In
some areas there were small eateries, if you were prepared to take your chances, and you
could buy mint tea just about everywhere.
