The Citadel and the statue of Saladin were at the end of the labyrinthine alleyways and
further on was the National Museum, the front of which comprised a reconstruction of the
gateway to an Umayyad castle with semi cylindrical towers. The reconstruction was ex-
cellent with extensive gardens and a backdrop comprising a magnificent stand of eucalypt
trees.
The antiquity of the exhibits was extraordinary and it would be interesting to line up the
artefacts and events with those of the Egyptian dynasties.
The statuettes from Ugarit were exquisite. I had never seen anything like them before and
the distinctive feature was that the figures were all smiling and had prominent eye decora-
tion.
