Wadi Rum, one of only two lonely trees seen in the area.
What made me grind my teeth was that, for prosterity, this was the first time I had attempted
something of the kind and found that I couldnt make it. The experience gave me something
to think about.
On back-tracking, we diverted to a Bedouin encampment. Our guide, Basil, was obviously
on the take in a number of these places. He laboured the point about purchasing various
artefacts and taking refreshment (which had to be paid for). He also drew attention to a
green outcrop higher up the side of the canyon, which he described as a spring discovered
by Lawrence, and which was now being tapped into by the local Bedouin.
It all sounded somewhat implausible and I was fast coming to the view that Basil saw us as
a cash cow to be milked through the nearest third party.
