were flourishing and it is believed that this led to the gradual decline of the settlements and
their eventual abandonment.
Our destination was to Serjilla, one of the best preserved of the settlements. The road took
us through some of the stoniest fields imaginable. Despite this, wherever there was a gap of
several feet or so, an olive tree had been planted. But the extent of the rock was extraordin-
ary and one could get the impression that the rocks were being grown as a crop.
The buildings at the settlement were in pretty good condition. Including a small church, a
two story building, a bath complex and olive oil presses.
Typical rocky country around Serjilla.
