ECSTPP Workshop—Summary
The ECSTPP Workshop focuses on the construction of computer science teacher
preparation programs. The purpose of the workshop is to enable its participants to
return to their respective institutions with the basic knowledge needed to start this
construction process. Such a workshop has the potential to help initiate the con-
struction of computer science teacher preparation programs that, in turn, according
to the model presented in Sect. 15.1, may foster the creation of the needed infra-
structure for high school computer science education on a national level.
15.3
Computer Science Teaching as an Additional Profession
This section presents a new approach towards computer science teaching that pro-
poses a solution to three social phenomena: (a) The shortage in science, technology,
engineering, and mathematics (STEM) teachers, especially on the high school level,
that many western countries experience, (b) people desire to contribute to the soci-
ety; and finally, (c) the structure of the work force which enables professionals, who
wish to change their career, to start a new one at the age of 40+ .
In what follows we briefly describe a program that implements this approach
(more details can be found in Hazzan and Ragonis 2014 ). The program is offered
